Inadequate sleep or poor sleep is the characteristic of insomnia. People with insomnia problems face difficulty sleeping. They often stay lazy in the daytime due to poor quality of sleep.

It affects your energy level, performance at work, physical health, and mental health like anxiety, depression, and cognitive disorders.

The average amount of sleep for a healthy individual is six to eight hours at night. However, according to American Psychiatric Association (APA), insomnia is reported in more than one-third of the general population and is considered the most common disorder.

Causes of Insomnia

  • Stress due to workload, family problems, or any unexpected situation or event.
  • Pain. Back pain and migraines play a role in the prevalence of insomnia.
  • Medicines like antidepressants commonly cause insomnia. Prescriptions like benzodiazepines and barbiturates also cause insomnia at the time of withdrawal.
  • Trauma. Sudden death, sex trauma, physical violence cause emotional rifts which affect conscious and subconscious behaviors such as sleep.
  • Sleep apnea. Difficulty in breathing while sleeping causes insomnia as well. Sleep apnea and insomnia go hand in hand.
  • Arthritis Sleep problems are related to arthritis, severe (painful) arthritis.
  • Diabetes. Due to varying glucose levels in the blood, there are reports of insomnia in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
  • Hypertension. Cardiovascular disorders and insomnia often coexist because of high blood pressure; there is a disturbance in normal lifestyle and hence causes insomnia.
  • Change in work hours. People who shift their work times from day to night and vice versa significantly impact their sleeping routine.
  • Traveling to different time zones. Those People who move a lot in different time zones have sleep disturbances due to interrupted sleep patterns.
  • Menopause. Insomnia as a menopausal symptom is common in females.
  • Obesity. Obese persons are more likely to have insomnia or sleep disorders like Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • Sedentary lifestyle. Sitting stagnant is not a healthy habit. It can cause lethargy and consequently lead to insomnia as well.
  • Pregnancy. Many pregnant women may face sleep disorders.
